Chang vs Leo vs Singha: My Personal Experience with Thailand's Most Popular Beers

If you spend enough time in Thailand, you'll quickly notice the same three beer brands everywhere: Chang, Leo, and Singha. Every convenience store, supermarket, and local restaurant has them, and everyone seems to have a favorite.

I'm not a beer expert, and this isn't a professional tasting review. This is simply my personal experience after trying all three over the past few months while living in Bangkok.

Everyone reacts to alcohol differently, so your experience may not be the same as mine.

Chang Beer

Chang was probably the first Thai beer I tried.

The taste is fairly smooth and easy to drink, especially when it's served ice cold. It pairs well with grilled meat and spicy Thai food.

What surprised me wasn't the flavor—it was how I felt afterward.

I didn't get a headache, and I didn't feel dizzy. Instead, I became sleepy not long after finishing the bottle. It was the kind of beer that made me want to go back to the hotel and take a nap.

For me, Chang feels relaxing rather than exciting.

Leo Beer

Leo has become my personal favorite.

The flavor is lighter than Chang and doesn't feel as heavy. It's easy to drink, especially in Thailand's hot weather.

More importantly, after drinking Leo, I stayed surprisingly clear-headed.

No headache.

No dizziness.

I could still walk around, chat with friends, or continue shopping without feeling uncomfortable.

If I had to choose one beer for a casual evening, Leo would probably be my first choice.

Singha Beer

Singha has a slightly different personality.

The taste feels stronger and more bitter than the other two. It gives me the impression of being a more "traditional" beer.

However, this is also the one that affected me the most.

After drinking Singha, I noticed that I became dizzy much more easily, and the after-effects lasted longer than with Chang or Leo.

Again, this is only my personal experience. Some of my friends actually prefer Singha and have no problems at all.

Most convenience stores sell these three brands at similar prices, although promotions are common.

You'll find them almost everywhere, from 7-Eleven to Big C and local supermarkets.

If I simply wanted to enjoy a cold beer after work, I'd buy Leo. If I wanted something to drink slowly with dinner, Chang would be a good choice. As for Singha, I'd probably only drink it occasionally because my body seems to react more strongly to it.

That's just my own experience, and everyone's body responds to alcohol differently.
