China's Internet Boom and Bust After 2008: A Developer's Journey Through the Rise of Internet Finance
I still remember that period.
At that time, I was working at a large internet company in southern China, developing financial software products.
I personally witnessed the entire journey of the internet finance industry, from rapid growth to decline.
It happened in only a few years.
From 2015 to 2018, the internet finance industry experienced explosive development, and then entered a completely different stage.
The Rise of the Website Economy
During that period, almost any company could build an online presence as long as they had a website.
Many overseas customers came to China for international trade.
There were customers from Africa, the Middle East, and other regions who needed product websites to understand Chinese manufacturers.
Because of this, website development demand became extremely strong.
This trend actually started after 2008.
I remember that corporate websites and portal websites became widely popular during that period.
China was becoming the world's manufacturing center.
Southern China was the core area of industrial production.
Many factories needed websites to introduce their products to overseas customers.
Without a website, some foreign customers did not feel confident about working with the company.
Many companies built websites mainly for trade exhibitions such as the Canton Fair.
The website needed to be completed quickly before the event.
After the exhibition ended, the importance of the website often decreased.
Because of this, development schedules were extremely tight.
There were many customers, but not enough developers.
Customized projects were difficult to handle.
Everyone was busy:
- Following design changes
- Meeting deadlines
- Fixing problems
- Delivering projects quickly
This environment created many small internet companies.
The whole internet production chain was extremely active:
- Product planning
- Design
- Development
- Deployment
- Maintenance
At that time, HR teams were constantly searching for suitable candidates.
China had no shortage of workers.
However, companies needed people who could:
- Learn quickly
- Take responsibility
- Communicate well
- Work independently
- Adapt to pressure
Finding the right person was never easy.
The Internet Boom and Its Illusion
During the boom period, even a simple website could generate business opportunities.
Some companies could attract customers and investment with only a basic product concept.
Presentation became very important.
People cared about:
- Professional appearance
- Business image
- Industry buzzwords
- Confidence
Because everyone understood one thing:
If you could not show confidence, people might not believe your ability.
Many people were trying to create a successful image.
Looking back, the industry was full of opportunities, but it was also full of uncertainty.
Some companies focused more on appearances than building long-term value.
As the market became overheated, unrealistic expectations continued to grow.
Eventually, the industry started changing.
The 2018 Internet Industry Adjustment
By 2018, the situation changed dramatically.
The internet industry entered a period of restructuring.
Large-scale layoffs happened.
Many investment projects disappeared quickly.
For many people, it felt like a dream had suddenly ended.
The rapid growth period was over.
Many people started realizing that market trends could completely change personal careers.
No matter how hard someone worked, they could still be affected by a major industry shift.
A job loss can force people to return to the starting point.
It makes people think about the future:
What should I do next?
Where should I go?
What kind of career should I build?
If overtime makes people question their lives,
unemployment often makes people truly reflect on their lives.
What I Learned From Those Years
Now I understand that making money is not only about personal ability.
Ability is important.
But timing and environment are also important.
If you are not in the right market cycle, even great effort may not bring the expected result.
I have seen many people involved in:
- Stock markets
- Futures trading
- Cryptocurrency
- Financial investments
Some people achieved their first major financial success within only a few years.
Then they quickly moved to the next opportunity.
Some people lost their gains because of excessive risk.
Some people left with nothing.
Many people came to big cities with dreams.
They contributed their youth, energy, and passion.
They built companies, products, and services.
But they also carried personal risks.
For ordinary people, maintaining long-term success is extremely difficult.
It requires:
- Good judgment
- The ability to protect wealth
- Continuous learning
- The ability to adapt to change
Nobody can stay at the same peak forever.
The world keeps changing.
People have to keep changing as well.
My Experience Working on Financial Products
In southern China's large internet companies, this kind of experience was very common.
I remember when a financial application needed to go online late at night.
The development team, product team, and operations team had to stay near the servers.
We needed to monitor everything carefully.
If an unexpected bug appeared, it had to be fixed immediately.
Because the product mainly served financial users in the United States, security requirements were extremely high.
A small mistake could cause serious problems.
This created significant pressure for everyone involved.
But at the same time, it was also a valuable experience.
It taught us how to build reliable systems and take responsibility.
Sometimes, late at night in Manila or Bangkok, I still remember those years.
The pressure.
The challenges.
The moments when everyone worked together toward the same goal.
Maybe this is part of our generation's journey.
We experienced difficult times.
We survived.
And looking back, I feel grateful.
2008 and 2018
2008:
The global financial crisis created a "capital winter" and changed many people's expectations about the economy.
2018:
The internet industry entered a new stage with structural adjustments and large-scale layoffs.
These two historical turning points changed many people's lives.
People cannot control every change in the world.
Sometimes we can only adapt and continue moving forward.
Time really passes quickly.
Looking back, many years have already gone by.
Life still requires continuous effort.
Without continuous growth, it is easy to lose direction.
The best choice is always to keep learning, keep improving, and keep moving forward.
